Description
Located on the hill in Gyeongju, this is the royal tomb of the 28th ruler of Silla, Queen Jindeok. In 647, after the death of her cousin Queen Seondeok, Queen Jindeok (647-654) ascended the throne to become Silla's second queen. The last monarch from Seonggol, the highest class in Silla's unique caste system, her real name is Seungman. Her father is King Gukbangalmun, King Jinpyeong's younger brother, and her mother is Lady Wolmyeong. During her eight-year reign, Queen Jindeok did much to promote relations with Tang China and, through the great general Kim Yu-sin, consolidated the national strength; thus laying the foundation for the eventual unification of Silla, Baekje, and Goguryeo. The round earthen mound is surrounded by supporting stones on which the 12 Oriental zodiac images are carved in relief. There are no special stone constructions in front of the tomb except an elevation and a pathway, which have been built recently. The tomb was renovated in 1975. Some argue that this is not the real tomb of Queen Jindeok because the tomb has a style developed much later.
