Description
It is a stone fortress constructed on Hwawangsan Mountain in the east of Changnyeong-eup. The year of the construction is not clear, but it seems like to have been built before the Three Kingdoms Period (76 B.C.-A.D.668), and it is considered as one of the fortresses of the Gaya Period (42-532). The fortress is rather large, while leaning against the rock mountain in the north and encircling the between the peaks. Changnyeong has been a fertile region, located near the middle stream of Nakdonggang River, hence it was a strategic transportation point and the military area in the Western Gyeongsangnam-do Province; thus, the fortress might have been played an important role. Currently, The east and west entrances of the fortress remain intact with the ponds in it. According to historical literature published during the reign of King Seongjong (1469-94), the fortress was obsolete for a long time. It began to be used again during the Japanese Invasion (1592-98) by General Gwak Jae-u. Through a several times of restoration since then, the fortress is preserved in a relatively good condition. According to the geographic record made during the reign of The Great King Sejong of the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910), the fortress was a strategic point guarding Changnyeong and also defend Yeongsan and Hyeonpung.
