Description
These are the graves and shrines to pay tribute to the 700 military service men, who died a heroic death in the battle of the Japanese army during the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592. The loyal soldiers under Jo Heon’s command and the fighting monks under Buddhist Monk Yeonggyu’s command united and recaptured the fortress of Cheongju in 1592. Afterward, he fought a hard battle with the rest of the soldiers against the Japanese army but all died in honor. His disciples Park Jeong-ryang and Jeon Seung-eop made one tomb for them, called “Tomb of Seven Hundred Patriotic Martyrs.” In the 36th year of the reign of King Seonjo (1603), the Monument for Jo Heon and the Soldiers was erected; in the 25th year of the reign of King Injo (1647), Jongyongsa Shrine was built to enshrine the mortuary tablet for the 700 loyal soldiers. During the Japanese Occupation, the Japanese tore down the Tomb and destroyed the Monument, but the villagers in Geumsan-gun hid the pieces to keep them. The graveyard was enlarged in 1963, and the memorial hall and the tower for the loyal soldiers were newly built in 1976.
