Description
Myodangdo Island was where Admiral Yi Sun-sin and Chen Lin from the Ming Dynasty defeated the Japanese navy together during the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1597. In the 31st year of the reign of King Seonjo (1598), the last year of the Japanese Invasions, Admiral Yi encamped here with 8,000 soldiers. In July 1598, he went to Gogeumdo Island with 5,000 soldiers to help Chen Lin of the Ming Dynasty. Since Myodangdo was close to Gogeumdo, the two countries encamped together there. For two months, it served as the naval headquarters of the Joseon and Ming dynasties. Today, Chungmusa Shrine dedicated to Admiral Yi Sun-sin and Okcheonsa Temple, which seemed to protect Chungmusa side by side, stand. Chungmusa originated with Gwanwangmyo Shrine where Chen Lin held a ceremony for Guan Yu for the well-being of soldiers after he had a dream of meeting him. Okcheonsa Temple was built in the 7th year of the reign of King Hyeonjong (1666) beside Gwanwangmyo Shrine for protection and to hold a ceremony during its repair work. During the Japanese imperialism, the statue of Guan Yu, memorial tablet, and several relics were thrown into the sea; only Bodhisattva in Okcheonsa Temple had been moved and preserved at Baegunsa Temple. After the restoration of independence, Chungmusa was built where Gwanwangmyo used to be, with the portrait of Admiral Yi preserved. It had been expanded since 1970. Here, based on Chungmusa in Gogeumdo, a committee was organized to pay tribute to the heroic life and death of Admiral Yi.
