Description

Built in the 4th year of the reign of King Seongjong of Joseon in November 1476, the Byeokjegwan Guesthouse Site used to be the general residence where Chinese ambassadors usually stayed. It was customary for the Chinese ambassador to spend the night here and go to Seoul the next day. In addition, Korean officials used to stay here on the way to China since it was located in an important place leading to China. In particular, the place used to be the site of the Byeokjegwan Battle between Ming led by General Yi Yeo-song and the Japanese enemies. The present site served as an inn, built in the third year of the reign of King Injo (1625) during Goyang-gun's moving. It is not clear whether it was repaired or not. It was burnt down during the Korean War, but the site remains today. Byeokjegwan was valuable as the first inn located on the road leading to the Gwanseo area. It was a significant place called Mohwagwan where the king himself received Chinese envoys and is an important site to preserve since it was used as an inn where Chinese envoys spent the night.
