Description
This shrine, named Hyeonchungsa, was built here at the site of the house where Chungmugong Yi Sun-sin lived until he passed the state military examination. In memory of General Yi Sun-sin, who rendered meritorious services during the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592, King Sukjong ordered the building of the shrine (1706) and named it Hyeonchungsa himself (1707). Though well-operated during the next 200 years, the shrine was once abandoned because of the oppression of Japan during the Japanese colonial period. It got its present appearance through the Hyeonchungsa restoration plan of 1967 following the restoration of independence. It consists of the main hall enshrining the portrait of General Yi Sun-sin, ancient house where he grew up, and site for practicing archery, front gate Hongsalmun, and tomb for Yi Myeon, his 3rd son. The exhibition hall displays many relics related to the admiral such as Nanjung ilgi (War diary), sword, military uniform, weapons, portrait of the admiral, etc. Note, however, that they are only imitations; the actual relics are preserved in Chungnyeolsa in Chungmu.
