Description

Dosanseowon Confucian Academy is the place where Toegye Yi Hwang built Dosanseodang Village School, educated disciplines, and studied. In the 7th year of the reign of King Seonjo (1574), his followers and disciples built Sangdeoksa Shrine and completed the construction of this academy the following year (1575) by building the Jeongyodang Lecture Hall and two dorms. It became the center of Confucianism in the region of Yeongnam when it was granted the status of a government-sponsored academy by King Seonjo in the 8th year of his reign (1575). Toegye Yi Hwang, who had left great writings about Confucianism, established Confucianism in Korea, ran Baegundongseowon Confucian Academy, and devoted himself to educating students and studying by constructing Dosanseodang. He was highly respected by many kings such as Jungjong, Myeongjong, and Seonjo, contributing to the prosperity of Confucianism in Japan. The buildings of this academy -- built in a simple, concise style like the house of a citizen at that time -- reflect Toegye's character and attitude as a scholar.
