Description

This is a shrine to commemorate Im Gyeong-eop's faith and loyalty to the country. Im Geyongeop is the famous general of Joseon who had been born in 1594 and who passed away in 1646. The shrine for General Im was built in the 23rd year of the reign of King Sukjong in 1679. King Sukjong bestowed him the posthumous name Chungmin in the 32nd year of his reign in 1706. King Yeongjo named the shrine Chungnyeolsa in the third year of his reign in 1727. General Im was born in 1594, the 27th year of the reign of King Seonjo, rendering meritorious service to the state at the outbreak of the revolt by Yi Gwal. During the Manchu Invasion of Korea in 1636 in particular, he contributed to protecting the state by reconstructing the fortress walls such as Baengmasanseong Fortress and Uijuseong Fortress. As a supporter of the Ming dynasty, he attempted to fight the Qing in 1642 but was arrested. Qing contrived to win the general over to its side with several offerings, but he never yielded. Later, in 1646, he was murdered in prison following severe torture after being accused of treason. The relics left by the general are now exhibited, and a monument commemorating his wife’s chastity stands on the left of the shrine.
