Description
This was the Belgian Consulate during the period of the Korean Empire. The construction began in 1903 and was completed in 1905. After the consulate office moved to Chungmu-ro in 1919, the building was used by Yokohama Life Insurance Company. Later on it was used as the military office of the Japanese navy. After independence, the Navy shore patrol occupied the building and then the Commercial Bank took its place. In 1970, the Commercial Bank decided to construct a new building on this spot, so the consulate office at Hoehyeon-dong was moved to the roadside of the Nambu Beltway in Gwanak-gu, Seoul. The building has two stories and a basement. Bricks and granite materials are used proportionately. The symmetrical structure discloses a Classicist influence. It is an important Western structure of the first half of the twentieth century.
