Description
In the area around Bangi-dong, Seoul, there are six ancient tombs built at the time when the Baekje Dynasty had settled in their capital city, Hanseong (the beginning of the 4th century – A.D. 475). The 1st tomb is a stone cave tomb with a passage and a broad chamber. Its earth mound has a diameter of 12 meters and a height of 2.2 meters. No relics had been found due to robbery there, but 3 pieces of earthenware were retreived by local villagers. The 4th tomb is a stone chamber tomb with an arched ceiling, and earthenware including grayish blue mounted dishes and covers hardened by glaze coated naturally, and ironware were found here. The grayish blue mounted dishes excavated from the 6th tomb have holes around the bottom, showing the typical earthenware pattern of Silla. This one might have been built in the Silla Dynasty when it occupied the riverside area of the Hangang River after the 6th century. Because of the time of construction of the Bangi-dong tombs as well as others one Seokchon-dong, it is possible to learn about the culture of Baekje when it moved its capital to Hanseong.
