Description
This 2-story stone building was the first to be built on the site of Yonsei University. Its construction was started in 1919 and completed in 1920. Pastor Underwood, who had established Yeonhui College, the predecessor of Yonsei, returned home to arrange funds to build a permanent school building for the university, but he died soon after securing the funds, which were donated by Mr. Charles Stimson who lived in Los Angeles. With this donation, the building was completed by Pastor Underwood’s successor, Mr. Evison. The pastor’s widow, Mrs. Underwood, presented the foundation stone, and Mr. Miller, the college’s professor of chemistry, supervised the construction work. It is not clear who designed the building, but it was said that some American architects had come to Korea to design and set up the basic plan. It was built in the Gothic pattern with a twin roof structure on a square floor plan.
