Description

This is the building also called Hakgwan (learning hall), one of two buildings, with Appenzeller Hall, built secondly after Stimson Hall in Yonsei University. Construction started in 1921 and was completed in 1924. It is a 4-story stone building, built to honor the spirit of Dr. Underwood, the founder of the university, with funds donated by his brother. The foundation stone was presented by Professor Won Han-gyeong, the eldest son of Dr. Underwood (Korean name Won Du-u), and Professor Miller of the college’s Chemistry Department supervised the construction work. It was built in a Gothic style with a square plan and a hall in the center. It was originally opened as classrooms, but currently houses the main offices including the major administration departments as well as the office of the president of the university.
