Description
In this area, situated about 1.5km southwest of Jukdo Island, lie buried Goryeo celadons. In 1987, underwater archaeological investigations conducted there found thirty two inlaid celadon ware and many other cultural heritage objects. Celadons raised from this sea section, if including all varieties, are close to one hundred in total number. Some of them appear to have ended up there through illegal routes. A few of them bear the inscription “Gisa” which is helpful for establishing the year in which they were made. As for the exact year, opinion is currently divided between 1269 and 1329. These potteries are presumed to have been made in a kiln in Daegu-myeon, Gangjin-gun, Jeonnam or in Boan-myeon, Buan-gun, Jeonbuk and the ship transporting them shipwrecked in this sea area.
