Description
This site is located at the Taebaeksan National History Archives, which was built as a trustee for Joseon wangjo sillok (Annals of the Joseon Dynasty), one of the five history archives built for this purpose during the Joseon Dynasty. The five archives are in the following mountainous locations: Odaesan Mountain, Manisan Mountain, Jeoksangsan Mountain, Chunchugwan (office for annals compilation), and Taebaeksan Mountain. Governor Ryu Yeong-sun of Gyeongsang-do Province recommended the construction in the 39th year (AD 1606) of the reign of King Seonjo and took custody of the annals of Joseon by 1913. During the Japanese Occupation, these records were moved to Gyeongseong Imperial University; currently, they are located in Kyujanggak Archives of Seoul National University. The building was burnt down before and after the Korean Liberation, buried by landslide, and subsequently excavated in 1988. Only adjunct buildings including Sillokgak (archive for annals), Seonwongak (archive for royal records), Poswaegak (site for the drying of books in the sun), and Geuncheongwan (caretakers’ quarters) are left.
