Description

This is a tomb for Goryeo Dynasty’s King Huijong (1204~1237), King Sinjong's eldest son. His mother was Empress Dowager Jeongseon Kim, and he married Queen Seongpyeong Wang. He ascended the throne in 1204; to come to real power, he attempted to remove Choe Chung-heon, an actual political power at that time, but failed and got banished to Gyo-dong, Ganghwado Island in the 7th year of the reign of King Huijong. He died in the 24th year of the reign of King Gojong (1237) at age 57. His body was moved to Nakjingung Shrine and was buried in Seongneung, south of Deokjeongsan Mountain, in October of the same year. His tomb was found and renovated by Jo Bok-yang who was appointed governor of Ganghwado Island during the Joseon Dynasty. Note, however, that some parts of his stone tomb weakened and caved in over time. In 1974, his tomb was renovated and repaired again.
