Description

Referring to the old temple site of Ingaksa Temple in Gunwi-gun, this site is located at the sedimentary area along the side of Wicheongang River in the northern side of Hwasan Mountain. Ingaksa Temple is said to have been built by Buddhist Monk Wonhyo during the reign of Queen Seondeok of the Silla Dynasty. Later, it was known as one of the most famous temples of the Goryeo Dynasty, and Master Ilyeon is said to have written Samguk yusa (Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms) during the next five years from the 10th year of the reign of King Chungnyeol of the Goryeo Dynasty at this temple. There is no confirmed record as to when it was built, but this temple is presumed to have existed already in the last years of the Unified Silla Dynasty because some building heritage sites from the age of the Unified Silla Dynasty were found at the site where Daeungjeon Hall was estimated to have been located during the excavation work. The main Buddha hall and two other buildings remain today at Ingaksa Temple, with the Stupa of State Preceptor Bogak and Stele at Ingaksa Temple (Treasure) serving as important cultural materials.
