Description
Donamseowon was established to honor the outstanding Confucian scholarship of Kim Jang-saeng (1548-1631) in 1634, the 12th year of the reign of King Injo of the Joseon Dynasty. Kim Jang-saeng was a great Confucian scholar who succeeded the scholarship of Yulgok and built the Giho Confucian School. He devoted his life to studying Confucianism and teaching his followers. King Hyeonjong of the Joseon Dynasty himself coined the name of the academy, Donam, and bestowed the big hanging board with the name of the academy on it in 1660. Donamseowon only erected the memorial tablets of Confucian scholars such as Kim Jip, Song Jun-gil, and Song Si-yeol. Quite a few old books have been preserved, including Hwanggang silgi (True Record of Hwanggang), Sagye yugo (Posthumous Works of Kim Jang-saeng), and Sangnyebiyo (Essentials of Funerary Rites); all three books are prose collections of Confucian scholars. Several buildings such as Sau Shrine, Eungdodang Lecture Hall, and Jangpangak (archive for printing woodblocks), Hamabi (stone hitching post), and Songdeokbi (memorial monument) have also been preserved. Donamseowon had survived the royal order of Heungseon Daewongun, father of King Gojong of the Joseon Dynasty, who ordered the abolishment of all Confucian academies but spared 47 important ones because they were very influential traditional local academies that had produced many great Confucian scholars.
