Description
This is the site of an official guesthouse for government officers in Gangneung, housing multiple lodges where the central government officers stayed when visiting Gangneung from the Goryeo Dynasty to the Joseon Dynasty. According to records from the Joseon Dynasty, the guesthouse was built in 936, the 19th year of the reign of King Taejo of the Goryeo Dynasty, and it had 83 rooms. Nonetheless, only Gaeksamun Gate (National Treasure), a gate of the guesthouse, has been preserved because it was not carefully protected during the Japanese imperialism. The hanging board on which King Gongmin of the Goryeo Dynasty wrote the name of the official guesthouse, Imyeonggwan, is still attached to Gaeksamun. Since the excavation carried out before the construction of Gangneung City Hall in 1993, the site has been regarded as a very important building site providing crucial information about the old government office buildings from the Goryeo Dynasty to the Joseon Dynasty. In fact, the site matches the records of Imyeongji (Chronicles of Imyeong). Its historical importance as a reliable source of data for research on old government building sites makes the site a very valuable historic spot. The site also shows the history and culture of the Gangneung region.
