Description
This is the front sea area of Doripo, Songseok-ri, Haeje-myeon, Muan-gun, Jeollanam-do where Goryeo celadon was buried. This sea area belongs to Hampyeongman Bay, the border sea area among Muan-gun, Yeonggwang-gun, and Hampyeong-gun. The Chilsan sea line was once used as the connecting line between the Gyeongin region and the southwestern shore region. The average depth of the sea area where the celadon was buried is 8 - 10m. The bottom of the sea consists of clay and sand. This area became well-known after civilian divers found 120 segments of remains. Later, the government established an excavating team, which discovered a total of 639 segments of remains believed to be Goryeo celadon of the 14th century through three separate excavations with the help of the Navy. The excavated remains were believed to be inlaid celadon from about 1370 to 1380. These are very important materials for research on the styles and inlaid patterns of celadon made in the late 14th century along with other celadon found in the sea in Sinan-gun and excavated from Jukdo Island in Boryeong-gun. The excavated celadon was believed to have been baked at the kiln in Sadang-ri, Daegu-myeon, Gangjin-gun, Jeollanam-do. It was also thought to have been used in the royal palace or official government building considering the inlaid patterns on it. The clouds, phoenix, chrysanthemum, peony, lotus blossom, and willow designs are expressed on the celadon. All of these designs are different from those of the celadon during its heyday in the 12th century; the Goryeo celadon clearly shows the influences of the social changes in the late 13th century and the Yuan China Dynasty. The Goryeo celadon pieces excavated here are very important materials for research on the characteristics of Goryeo celadon. We can also observe the transitional celadon connecting Goryeo celadon in the Goryeo Dynasty to Buncheong in the Joseon Dynasty.
