Description

This is where celadon and white porcelain are made and baked. Two recent excavations on this site in 1997 to 1998 revealed that it was a kiln where porcelain was baked in the 9th to 10th century. The excavated kiln is 35.8m long. It has a fireplace, a chimney, a firewall, and 9 entrances to the kiln. Various kinds of porcelain have been found from the kiln site, such as celadon without any pattern on it, which was believed to be the early model of celadon and white porcelain, and celadon with halo-shaped foot showing the influence of the porcelain produced in the Wolju area of China. Many gapbals – or covers for porcelain during the baking process to prevent the surface of the porcelain from getting stained by dirt -- have also been found. The excavated vestiges from the kiln site are similar to those from the lowest layer of the Goryeo White Porcelain Kiln Site in Seo-ri, Yongin (Historic Site No. 329) and from the celadon kiln in Wonsan-ri, Hwanghae-do. Another kiln from the Unified Silla Dynasty was also excavated 10m south of the kiln site and was believed to have been used for a while after the fall of the Unified Silla Dynasty. The kiln site is in relatively good condition. Built with firebricks, it is regarded as a model kiln of the early celadon kiln.
