Description

This is the memorial site for Song Si-yeol whose penname was Uam and is one of the center points of Confucianism in the Joseon Dynasty. Hwayangseowon Confucian Academy was built on the place where Song Si-yeol once stayed for a while. It was often used as a meeting place among Confucian scholars in the Joseon Dynasty. The place of Mandongmyo (Shrine to Honor Ming China) is a Confucian shrine housing the memorial tablets of Emperor Sinjong and Uijong in the Ming Dynasty of China. There are many remains related to Song Si-yeol around Mandongmyo, such as Amseojae (library), Hamabi (stone hitching post), Eupgungam Rock, Tomb of Song Si-yeol, and stele for him as well as the phrases “Chunghyojeorui” and “Biryebudong” on the stonewall around Amseojae. This site was not only the center point of Confucianism in the Joseon Dynasty but also the place where the loyalty and national pride of Song Si-yeol dwell. Once destroyed by the Japanese colonial government, this is a good educational site to enhance national pride.
