Description
Covering the Jangseon-ri and Anyeong-ri areas in Tancheon-myeon, Gongju, Chungcheongnam-do, this archaeological site was discovered during excavations carried out while building a rest stop on the Cheonan-Nonsan expressway. Many relics were discovered at the site, including 4 Bronze Age dwelling sites, 30 circular dwelling sites, 1 stone cist tomb, 1 jar coffin tomb, a number of Songguk-ri-type earthenware relics such as red burnished earthenware and stoneware, 39 remains of earth-wall houses believed to date back to the Mahan Period, 5 rectangular dwelling sites, 15 remains of pit houses, and 1 tomb with horizontal tunnel. Various daily household earthenware items were also found such as egg-shaped vessels, deep ceramic bowls, steamers, and bowls. The Bronze Age dwelling sites are located on the flat planes of hills, and they have the structure of oval pits with holes arranged around them for pillars. Having the same form as the dwelling sites of Songguk-ri and dating back to around the mid-Songguk-ri period, they are deemed helpful in understanding the transition from the Bronze Age to the early Iron Age. Remains of the Proto Three Kingdoms Period include various remains of daily life including sites of earth-wall houses, pit houses, and storage pits, with the earth-wall house sites as the new finds. Since most of the relics found here are everyday earthenware items, this can be said to be a settlement site. As the first site to be excavated in Korea, the archaeological site in Jangseon-ri, Gongju is important not only in cultural history and archaeology but also for the study of housing culture in the early Three Kingdoms Period. In addition, since the architectural remains from the Bronze Age overlap with those of the early Iron Age, the site is important in studying the history of human life in this area.
