Description
The group of tombs on Choansan Mountain consists of over 1,000 tombs of people of all classes -- from aristocrats to commoners -- as well as hundreds of stone structures such as steles, altar stones, stone statues of scholars, and statues of child monks. The tomb site features a wide variety of stone statues of civil officials and child monks at the tombs of commoners, “middle people” called jungin, eunuchs, court ladies, and members of the aristocracy, spanning all periods from the 15th century onward. There are a particularly large number of eunuch’s tombs, with the tomb and stele of 17th century eunuch Seung Geuk-cheol providing valuable information on the study of the lives of eunuchs. Since there are few examples of Joseon Dynasty tombs of varied classes mixed together in this way, the Choansan Mountain tombs, where the graves of all classes continued to be made here for a long time, is a valuable site for the study of changes in tomb types. Considering the highly diverse stone statues of scholars and child monks, they are valuable materials for the study of changes in stone sculpture.
