Description
The main building of the former Daegu College of Medicine (currently the building of Kyungpook National University School of Medicine) was built during the Japanese Occupation to serve as an institution for the education of medical professionals in the Daegu area; it was opened in 1933 as the Daegu College of Medicine. The building faces the Former Daegu Provincial Hospital (Historic Site No. 443, presently Kyungpook National University Hospital). A three-story building made of red brick, stretching east to west, it has a southern aspect with a four-story turret in the middle of the facade and a turret on the roof. The building has a central corridor whose layout is shaped like a pitchfork with the two sides a little shorter than the middle, symmetrically arranged based on the front porch. The distinguishing features on the building facade are the curved protruding central wall and the horizontal cornice between the windows of each floor and on the parapet part of the roof -- which emphasize the frontal part -- and the vertical walls between the windows and on the turret on the roof, which highlight the perpendicularity. Overall, the building has a sense of dignity and stability as an important building that witnessed the history of modern medical education in Korea, and it is in very good condition overall. The composition of the parts and the whole is carefully thought out; as a very well-executed building, it is also valuable in the study of modern architecture in Korea and the history of education.
