Description
From the relics found at the forts in Achasan Mountain and the method of construction used to build them, the forts are assumed to date back to the Three Kingdoms Period. The forts show the history of Goguryeo taking over the Hangang River basin in the late 5th century and subsequently losing it to the forces of Silla and Baekje in 551. There are 17 forts in the Achasan Mountain area including Achasan Fort, Yongmasan Fort, Sirubong Fort, Suraksan Fort, and Mangusan Fort. Ten of these are assumed to be Goguryeo forts and are concentrated around Jungnangcheon Stream, Achasan Mountain, and Yongmasan Mountain area. Excavations have revealed the greatest density in distribution of Goguryeo relics here, showing what Goguryeo military facilities were really like. They are very important in archaeological research, since Goguryeo relics had been few in comparison to those of Silla or Baekje, which hindered research on the Goguryeo Dynasty. The forts are important historical materials shedding light on the nature and structure of fortresses of the Three Kingdoms especially Goguryeo. They help glean information on the border area and system of defense and army composition and provide important information on Goguryeo’s southward advance and defense of the Hanggang River basin, which is fought over by the Three Kingdoms.
