Description
The archaeological site in Wolpyeong, Suncheon is found on hilly land at the end of the southern range of Jogyesan Mountain, beside the sedimentary layer of streams that run through the area, Songgwangcheon Stream to the north and west, and Oeseocheon Stream to the south. Covering a wide area of 50,000 pyeong (approx. 165 square kilometers) in a favorable location, this site was first excavated in 1998 and again in 2001, revealing eight geological layers and four Paleolithic cultural layers. Some 9,400 late Paleolithic relics were discovered. The site also has cultural layers ranging from prehistoric times to the historic age, i.e., from the Stone Age to the Iron Age. Along with the Archaeological Site in Suyanggae, Danyang (Historic Site No. 398) and Archaeological Site in Hahwagye-ri, Hongcheon, Gangwon-do, this site in Wolpyeong, Suncheon is one of the largest Paleolithic sites in Korea and is very important in understanding our country’s prehistoric culture particularly the transition from the Paleolithic Age to the Neolithic Age.
