The tombs in Suchon-ri, Gongju were discovered after a surface survey of the area intended to designate it as the site of an agriculture-industry complex planned by the city of Gongju. Instead, the survey revealed the existence of archaeological remains. Excavation of the site unearthed a Bronze Age dwelling site as well as many tombs including pit tombs from the early Iron Age and pit tombs with wooden chambers, stone chamber tombs with horizontal entrances, and stone-lined pit tombs from Baekje. The pit tombs from the early Iron Age contained many intact relics including various bronze items such as slender bronze swords and pommel fittings of bronze dagger, pottery with clay stripes, and long-necked earthenware jars, providing important materials for the study of burial customs and types of tombs from the early Iron Age. The Baekje tombs in the site are important not only in providing information on the changes in Baekje tombs in the Gongju area, but also because the relics discovered are believed to have been produced before the capital of Baekje was moved to Ungjin. Burial items intended to show the power of the person in question were found as well, including gilt-bronze crown, gilt-bronze shoes, gold earrings, sword with ring pommel, Chinese black-glazed pottery, and black-glazed ewer with cock-shaped head. These indicate that the person buried in the tomb was a person of some power in the Gongju area, serving as important material on the history of Baekje showing the connection between the central and local governments during the time Hanseong was the capital.
