Description

This group of tombs, dating back to late Silla, is proof that King Jinheung, after expanding his territory to the Chungju region, moved his relatives to Jungwon to make a lesser capital there with the intent of controlling the Hangang River basin. There are some 230 tombs in the Nuam-ri area. Most of the 26 tombs excavated are stone chamber tombs with tunnel entrances; apart from two stone-lined tombs with horizontal entrances and three small stone-lined pit tombs, they are mostly single-chamber tombs. Excavated relics include late Silla earthenware items such as low-footed dishes, rice bowls, lidded bowls, and jars, iron items such as daggers and nails, bronze belt ornaments, accessories such as gilt-bronze earrings, and earthen items such as spinning wheel.
