Description

Embracing a valley, this fortress was built from 1675 (first year of the reign of King Sukjong) to 1682. It was located in a rough country to serve as refuge for the people in times of war during the latter half of the Joseon Dynasty. The fortress walls have circumference of 8,539m and height of 1.8-2.6m. Facilities include 4 gates, 6 hidden gates, 2 command posts, 13 batteries, 15 supposed building sites, and 1 water gate. Except for some parts of the walls, the facilities are well-preserved. Unlike other fortresses that were purely military facilities, this fortress had -- inside its walls -- a royal villa where the portrait of King Taejo, founder of the Joseon Dynasty, could be enshrined in times of emergency. It is a valuable site for the study of late Joseon fortresses.
