Description
Covering an area of 97,342 square meters in Jindong-ri, Jindong-myeon, Masan, Gyeongsangnam-do, the archaeological site was discovered during a land division project; excavations led to the discovery of Korea’s largest Bronze Age grave site, including a large number of dolmens and stone cist tombs. The round or rectangular dolmens were found in groups forming a large graveyard (500m long, 150-200m wide), with the 41 stone cist tombs found in groups of 2-5 forming 4 smaller graveyards. Relics found include polished stone daggers, stone arrowheads, and shards of pattern-less potteries. Dolmen No. 1 (Group A) has clear boundary and burial area. The round boundary was large, with diameter of 20m; a drain was dug around the edge. Inside the boundary, a mound was made with small stones and subsequently covered with clayish soil and topped with perpend stones. In the middle was an aboveground burial area. Judging from the scale and shape of the graveyard, those buried in the dolmens were clearly of a different class from those buried in the stone cist tombs. The shape and size, structure, and other characteristics of the dolmens and stone cist tombs provide insight into the development of early Korean states, rank, and blood relations in the group. Culturally, the relics found here are similar to those of the Bronze Age in Northeastern China; thus serving as important material for future comparative study on the flow, tradition, and origins of our culture.
