These remains -- ranging from the early historic period of Mahan Confederacy (1st century B.C. - A.D. 3rd century) to the Baekje (18 B.C. - A.D. 660) and Joseon (1392-1910) periods -- were surveyed in 2003 by an excavation team from the Cultural Heritage Center of the Chungnam Institute of History and Culture. It was the first excavation of a large group of settlements and burial sites of Mahan and Baekje in the Seocheon area, along the lower reaches of the Geumgang River. The remains are valuable for the study of society and culture in the region during the early historic period. Their designation as a historic site will ensure they are better preserved and utilized as history education materials.
