Description

The Temporary Palace of Bukhansanseong Fortress was a defense stronghold on the northern outskirts of the capital city during the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910). It was also one of the three wartime residences of Joseon kings in the capital area, the other two being situated at Namhansan Mountain, to the south of the city, and at Ganghwado Island just off the west coast. Although the palace has disappeared, its vestiges are important for studies of the Joseon elite’s governing philosophy during the latter period of the dynasty. Surface surveys were conducted in 1999, revealing a number of remains indicating palace structures. Underground remains have also been confirmed by subsequent excavations.
