Description

Unlike other emergency residences of Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) kings, this temporary palace was equipped with facilities for government as well as a royal ancestral shrine and altars for the gods of land and grain. Note that the palace was located inside Namhansanseong Fortress, which was never conquered during the many resistances against foreign aggression. Namhansanseong Fortress (Historic Site No. 57) shows the best construction technology among all ancient fortresses in the country. Excavation of the palace site began in 1999. As a result, the residence for the abdicated king and the throne hall were rebuilt. A huge roof tile was unearthed from a building site along with numerous artifacts, proving the historical and academic value of the site.
