Description

In this local government compound of the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) the rear mountain, main offices and gate stand along the same axis. The layout is reminiscent of Gyeongbokgung, the main palace of Joseon, where the rear mountain, throne hall and main gate are placed along the north-south axis. Due to the destruction of the main office building, the guesthouse is the largest extant building in the compound. The pavilion-type structure is decorated with brilliant paintwork on the wooden surfaces. A local township (myeon) office building currently occupies the site of the main office building. Another extant ancient building was an auxiliary structure used as a local functionaries’ office. Many ancient maps and records depict the compound’s original appearance. This is a valuable legacy showing the typical composition of local government compounds and surrounding scenery and roads during the late years of the Joseon Dynasty.
