Description

Numerous remains of human settlements and Bronze Age burial sites clustered on alluvial deposits along the Bukhangang River were discovered in 1981 by an archaeological survey team of the National Museum of Korea. Since then, Hallym University Museum and the Gangwon Cultural Heritage Research Institute have conducted surface surveys and excavations of these composite remains, which mostly date from the Neolithic to Three Kingdoms (1st century B.C. - A.D. 7th century) periods. During the excavations carried out in 1996 on the site for a road leading to the Sinmaedaegyo Bridge, in particular, settlements and artifacts preceding other Bronze Age remains in the country were found along with remains from different periods. These remains deserve careful preservation and management as they provide important clues to historical connections between the northeastern district and the Hangang River Basin in the central region. They are very important for the study of early civilization on the Korean Peninsula from Neolithic times to the Iron Age.
