Description
A large number of human settlements and burial sites dated to the Neolithic Age, Bronze Age, Iron Age and the Three Kingdoms Period (1st century B.C. - A.D. 7th century) have been discovered around Chodang-dong in Gangneung. The discoveries were made by the Gangneung National University Museum and the Gangwon Cultural Heritage Research Institute through twenty-seven series of excavation work starting in 1993. From May to June 2005 the Gangwon Cultural Heritage Research Institute found a large pit-type stone chamber tomb during the excavation of a home development site at 84-2 Chodang-dong. An array of impressive objects, including a gilt-bronze diadem ornament in the shape of a butterfly, silver girdle ornaments, harness equipment, an iron sword and iron arrowheads were unearthed from the tomb, which, uniquely, had a secondary chamber. These are important finds that attest to the existence of a powerful local political group during the Three Kingdoms Period, as well as providing clues to the geopolitical status of the Gangwon region and its relations with Silla.
