Description

Hwaeomsa Temple was founded by Priest Yeongi in 754 (the 13th year of the reign of King Gyeongdeok of Silla), and was later restored according to a prophesy of State Preceptor Doseon. After its restoration by Master Byeogam during the Joseon Dynasty, it served as a leading center of Buddhist meditation and the dissemination of Buddha’s teachings. The overall layout of the buildings is unique in that the line along which Daeungjeon Hall and the roofed gate are placed forms a right angle with another line along which Gakhwangjeon Hall and the stone lantern are placed. The temple keeps four items designated as National Treasures, including Gakhwangjeon Hall of Hwaeomsa Temple (National Treasure No. 67), and eight items designated as Treasures.
