Description
Dundeokgiseong Fortress is an important historic site that exhibits a fortress-building technique used during 7th-century Silla. Its East Gate was a type of a vertically-opened gate rarely found in this country. The walls of the fortress were originally built during the Three Kingdoms Period and underwent repairs during the Goryeo Period. Based on the relics unearthed at the site, including pottery with stamped design, inscribed roof tiles, and celadon dishes, the fortress is thought to have been part of an administrative town dating back to the reign of King Munmu of Silla and the site of the Geoje-gun Administrator’s office during the reign of King Gyeongdeok of Silla. According to works of literature such as Goryeosa (The History of Goryeo) and Sinjeung dongguk yeoji seungnam (Revised Augmented Survey of the Geography of Korea), King Uijong of Goryeo was exiled to Geojedo Island for three years following a rebellion by the kingdom’s military leaders, while members of the royal family of Goryeo were exiled here upon the foundation of the Joseon Dynasty.
