Description
The Yongsan Theological School was founded in 1892. The building was designed by E. G. Coste, a French Catholic father who also supervised its construction. This two-story brick building with a half-basement level housed Korea’s first theological school. The main entrance to the building is accessible through two outdoor staircases, on either side, and the entrance to the half basement is below it. Today, the Yongsan Theological School is based in Hyehwa-dong. After the school’s relocation, the building was used for some time as a branch of St. Mary’s Hospital. Currently, a convent is set up there by the Society of the Sacred Heart. Although expanded a few times over the course of its existence, the building has mostly kept its original appearance. The seat of the first theological school, this building is of great significance for the history of Korean architecture.
