Description

The Archaeological Site in Yongdam-dong, Jeju, was unearthed during the rescue excavation conducted from February to May 2011 prior to the commencement of a development project in the area. This large prehistoric site includes the sites of 29 pit houses, three large buildings, three dwellings showing traces of fire, four wells, and fifty eight vertical houses. Excavations from the site include pottery wares such as Jeju earthenware vessels with straight mouth, round and triangular earthenware vessels with clay stripes, bowls, high-footed cups, reddish brown pottery, and earthenware vessels with handle, and stoneware such as grooved stone adzes and stone spears, as well as stone grinding pestles and grinding stones. In addition, a number of large Yongdam-dong-style dolmens were found alongside Hancheon Stream, forming the largest dolmen complex in Jeju. This archeological site containing prehistoric sites and dolmens offers a wealth of materials for understanding the early archeological history of Jeju.
