Description

This Stone Fortress with a square layout was built on flat land during the mid-15th century, although most of the fortifications of the period were built on hilly or mountainous areas. The structure and function of the fortress have been fully identified through two excavations and related academic conferences. It was originally a stone fortress designed to defend the area from the enemies, but over time, it also included government storehouses and a marketplace for local people. An increasing number of scholars are now paying attention to the multiple functions the fortress performed in the past. The fortress’ original walls and the moats outside them built in the mid-15th century are still in relatively fine condition. Historians are particularly interested in its square layout, the structures built on flat land, and its role of housing small military units that protected the area from outside enemies. The use of a soldiers’ course for the lowest tier of the entire wall and large hewn foundation stones are some of the unique elements that are rarely found in other similar facilities.
