One of the greatest Neo-Confucian scholar-statesmen during the mid-Joseon Dynasty, Yi I (pen-name: Yulgok), further developed the knowledge set up by Yi Hwang (pen-name: Toegye) and laid a firm foundation of Neo-Confucianism during the Joseon Period. The historic site consists of Jaunseowon Confucian Academy, which houses a shrine honoring the life and achievement of Yi I, and his familial cemetery with his grave and that of his mother, Sin Saimdang. The site is now widely admired as the most important historical remains to represent Yi I’s historical achievements.
