Description
Chuseongsanseong Fortress in Jeungpyeong was built as an earthen fortification during the fourth to fifth century, and was the largest fortress outside Baekje’s capital city. The fortress features a dual-fortification (or concentric) structure consisting of internal and external walls, as well as a southern fortress and a northern fortress, which are characterized by their own flat structure, making them a valuable material for the study of Beakje fortresses. Regarding the techniques used to build the fortress, the early stage’s rammed earth technique and mound layering were used to build the earthen walls, a feature rarely seen at other fortress sites. According to the chronology of the deep-bowl pottery excavated from the foundations of the southern fortress, it is assumed that it was built by the natives and Hanseong Baekje Kingdom around the late 4th century. As it is the earliest fortress of all those investigated in the Geumgang River region, Chuseongsanseong Fortress is considered an invaluable archaeological site.
