Description

Okdongseowon Confucian Academy in Sangju was built to commemorate Hwang Hui (pen-name: Bangchon, 1363-1452), a royal vassal between the late Goryeo and early Joseon periods who laid the foundations for Confucianism in the early Joseon Dynasty. The academy received a name plaque from King Jeongjong in 1789 (the 3rd year of his reign). It is one of the forty-seven Confucian academies that survived the decree issued by Heungseon Daewongun requiring the abolition of all Confucian academies and schools in 1871 (the 8th year of the reign of King Gojong). The academy preserves many documentary heritages including three portraits of Hwang Hui, printing blocks of five kinds of 241 books, including the Collection of Bangchon’s Writings, around three hundred ancient documents, and eleven hanging boards. Along with the surrounding historic, cultural, and environmental assets, Okdongseowon Confucian Academy and these records have been well preserved, constituting an invaluable resource for the study of architecture, history, and literature of the early Joseon period.
