Description
The government buildings in Yeongwol-bu of the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) are now remembered largely for their connection with the tragedy of the boy king Danjong (r. 1452-1455), who was dethroned by his uncle and banished from the royal court to this remote place, where he was murdered when he was just 17. The central building, or gaeksa (guesthouse), known to have been built in 1369 and renovated in 1791, consists of three halls: Gwanpungheon Hall, a five-kan (one kan being a unit of measurement of the space between two columns) structure situated in the east; Seoikheon Hall, a four-kan structure situated in the west; and Jeongcheong (Central Hall), a three-kan structure in the middle. Standing in a corner of the precincts is a tower-style building Jagyuru featuring a three-kan by two-kan structure. Both the buildings and the site are in good condition overall as they were renovated during the late Joseon period.
