Description

The Naval Headquarters established for the defense of Jeolla-do was moved from present-day Mokpo to Haenam in 1440, and was reorganized as the Jeolla Right Naval Headquarters in 1470 with the establishment of the Jeolla Left Naval Headquarters at Naeryepo Port in Suncheon-bu, and remained in Haenam until 1895. The fortress walls of the naval headquarters appear to have been built during the mid- sixteenth century. The outer part of the wall was made with stone, and its inner part filled with earth. The headquarters also had a fortified entrance at a strategic point seven kilometers to the east to prevent enemy forces from land.
