Description

Deokjinsanseong Fortress is located at a strategic point in a hilly spot (85m) adjacent to the Imjingang River, overlooking the wide open area around it. Originally built by Goguryeo during its exploration of the southern part of the Korean Peninsula, it was repaired and rebuilt by Unified Silla, and was restored yet again by the Joseon Dynasty during the reign of King Gwanghaegun (r. 1608-1623) following the Imjin Waeran, the seven-year war waged between Korean and Japan after the Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592. Closely connected with other Goguryeo fortifications built along the north bank of the Imjingang River, including Horogoru, Dangposeong and Eundaeriseong, the fortress is regarded as a crucial source of information on the history and culture of Goguryeo.
