The higan cherry grows in Hwanghae-do, Jirisan Mountain, Bogildo Island, and Jejudo Island. Because the flowers of this tree blossoms before the leaves, and before other cherry trees, it is called Olbutnamu in Korean. This tree is usually used for the beautification of the environment. The higan cherry of Hwaeomsa Temple is about 300 years old. It is 12 m tall and has a girth of 4.42 m. According to an old legend, after the Manchu War of 1636, King Injo ordered his subjects to plant as many cherry trees in order to provide wood for bows. At that time, Byeogam, the Buddhist monk at Hwaeomsa Temple agreed with the King and planted as many higan cherry trees in the precints of the temple. This tree is one that was planted by Byeogam. The higan cherry in the precints of Hwaeomsa Temple has been under our ancestors' care and protection and is also valued for its biological properties. Therefore, it is designated and protected as a Natural Monument.
