Description
Oriental arborvitae trees grow in Korea, including Danyang, Dalseong, Andong, and Yeongyang, and in China. They usually form into forests by taking root on cliffs. They are often planted around houses and in towns to create beautiful surroundings. The forest of oriental arborvitae in Yeongcheon-ri is located in a limestone area at an altitude of about 100 meters, beside the road from Danyang to Jecheon. Planted at small intervals, they usually grow to 1 ~ 2 meters in height. Although it is known as a forest of oriental arborvitae, other species including bridal wreath trees, which usually grow in limestone areas, are also found there. This forest is a natural habitat of oriental arborvitae, a rare species in Korea. It has been designated as Natural Monument (No. 62) because of its outstanding value for research on plant colonies and group genetics.
