Description
Long-leaf zelkova tree is a rare tree found only in Korea, and its leaves are longer and narrow. Long-leaf Zelkova of Dogye-ri in Samcheok is about 1,000 years old, with height of 30m and girth of 9.10m. It was worshipped as a tree sacred to tutelary deities by villagers and an object on which one wishes for happiness, peace, and prosperity. In the olden times, many scholars took shelter here from the war. Therefore, when the college entrance season comes, some parents offer a devout prayer to wish for their sons and daughters' successful admission to college. According to legend, the tree was situated in the school playground so the inhabitants decided to change the tree. However, suddenly there were a bolt of thunder and a flash of lightning. Long-leaf Zelkova of Dogye-ri has lived under the attention and care of villagers, and it is highly valuable for its academic and cultural implications. Therefore, it is designated and protected as a natural monument.
